Materials:
1) Miss Spider’s New Car, by David Kirk
2) Pictures from the story
3) Sentence Strips
4) Writing paper & utensils
Procedure:
1) Introduce sequencing/illicit ideas (show the word “sequence on board or chart)
2) Show examples using pictures and/or words (stages of life/getting ready for school)
3) Introduce book-view cover, author/illustrator and make predictions
4) Read Miss Spider’s New Car
5) Using pre-written sentence strips, put the story together as a group (use pocket chart, board, etc)
6) Students will return to seats with small (pre-made) bags that contain words and/or pictures of a story where they will practice sequencing.
7) Students will be asked to write a new story using the cards they just sequenced
Assessment:
1) Observing children during group activity as well as reading final product
Accommodations:
1) Provide picture cards to help the visual learner
Extension:
Create a sequencing classroom book. Set-up a classroom center with various picture cards, high frequency word cards, etc and students are able to create their own stories during center time.
